San Giovanni Castle and Romano Castle

We are in the land of the Lodron, the ancient feudal lords who ruled the Valley unchallenged and whose period of greatest splendour was in the 1400s. This was a time of castles, crusades and legends
The Valle del Chiese also offers history and culture buffs a wide range of possibilities with the Trentino Castles.

In fact, San Giovanni Castle and Romano Castle are located here. For centuries they were home to the Lodron family, the feudal caste that dominated the Valle del Chiese.

San Giovanni Castle

The Trentino castles include San Giovanni Castle. Besides its architecture, its position is definitely captivating. Located on a high rock spur in Baitoni, in the city of Bondone, this castle has a breathtaking panorama.

Visitors to this Trentino castle are welcomed by the great studded door which is reached via a drawbridge. From here, the courtyard is reached. It extends in a semi-circle towards the valley.
In the 50s, the castle was purchased by Luigi Cavalli of Milan who died here tragically.
San Giovanni Castle still maintains its mysterious aspect with rooms and secrets that may never be revealed.

The castle can be reached by car along the road that winds its way to Baitoni on the banks of Lake Idro and Bondone or by foot, following the trail that leaves from Baitoni and is equipped with benches and rest areas.

Romano Castle

Romano Castle magnificently overlooks the entire Valle del Chiese up to Lake Idro and it is perhaps this strategic position that over the centuries led it to be a target for looting and attacks by various armies.

The recovery in progress is revealing a more intimate history of Romano Castle, filled with refinements and frescoes.
